Welcome to the IDP Weekend Preview. Each week we’ll take a close look at each matchup based on a number of factors, such as roles, where offenses are giving up FP, and snap counts.
Now that we have a few games under our belts, we can dig deeper into the numbers to find trends and matchup advantages. Keep in mind, we prefer about 4 weeks of data before feeling fully confident about matchups, so I’ll still be leaning on snap counts and roles.

The Bears secondary has been a good spot for fantasy. Eddie Jackson continues to be “steady Eddie.” The safety has 6 and 8 tackles. Of those 14 tackles, 12 have been solo. A top play in CB-required leagues is Kyle Fuller. Through two games, he has 9 solos, 1 INT, and 3 PD. Rookie corner Jaylon Johnson has 10 tackles and 5 PD, playing two strong games at RCB. The Falcons are the #8 team for opposing DB production, giving up 32.5 tackles per game. Danny Trevathan might be dealing with an undisclosed injury. His snaps and production are noticeably down. The Bears D-line is off to a strong start. DT Akiem Hicks had another good game: 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1.5 TFL. The rotation of Barkevious Mingo and veteran Robert Quinn has been good for real football and fantasy for both players. I also think it’s benefitting Khalil Mack. Mack has 7 tackles, 1 sack, and a forced fumble through 2 games.
Foyesade Oluokun was a BALLER until he got hurt. He had 5/1 on just 18 of 82 snaps and was a forced-fumble machine. Dan Quinn raved about him after the game. Mykal Walker had 7 tackles in place of Oluokun, who is listed as Questionable for Sunday. Safety Keanu Neal is still not explosive. He's not fully back to 100%, but still DB2/DB3 productive. Rookie A.J. Terrell has 6 and 5 tackles so far. This Falcons secondary has a good matchup, as the Bears are the #7 team for DBs. Dante Fowler, Jr. is playing 75% and has a half-sack in each of his first two games. He played through an ankle injury in Week Two and hasn’t practiced this week, so watch his status.

Aaron Donald had one of those triple-team games. And even then he got close a few times. Just ride these out. MLB Micah Kiser racked up 15 tackles, but a lot of those were from getting exposed in coverage. Kiser gave up 11 catches for 97 yards. We saw this in Week One with Miami’s Jerome Baker, who had a massive tackle day, but mainly due to being targeted in the double-digits. Just as Baker’s numbers fell back down to norms over the next two games (5-7 tackles), will the same thing happen to Kiser? At least he has a good tackle crew to play in front of this week. Both John Johnson III (5/3 and 2 PD) and Jordan Fuller (5/4) had good games last week. Both are looking like good plays this week, as Buffalo gives up the most fantasy production to opposing DBs.
Congrats to the ones who kept the faith in DT Ed Oliver: 4 solos, 1 sack, and a PD playing 50% of the snaps. Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano - who were both out in Week Two - are Questionable for Week Three. With Edmunds and Milano out, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were busy. Whoever plays LB for Buffalo (it should be Tyler Dodson and/or A.J. Klein if the top two can’t go) will have a tough matchup. The Rams give up just 15.5 tackles per game, with no big plays.

Chase Young (4 solos - 1 sack on 71%) is the real deal. He won't get a sack every week, but he's going to be special. The entire WFT D-line is primed for a lot of production. Cleveland has yet to allow a sack to a DL. That’s likely to change this weekend. The surprise of Week Two was LB Kevin Pierre-Louis. KPL posted 15 tackles (10 solo). I'm not sold that he will be a 10-15 tackle guy based on one game, plus they might get Thomas Davis involved this week. But if Pierre-Louis posts a similar encore this week, it will be time to pay him some attention. Every-down LB Jon Bostic has posted back-to-back identical lines: 5/2/1. I love those sacks from our ILBs. Landon Collins also had a sack, with another strong game. The Browns have given up 2 sacks to LBs so far, and Collins essentially serves as an LB. FS Troy Apke had a rough Week One, but he's still the every-down option. In Week Two, he posted 5 solos, while Kamren Curl (41%) operated as the third safety and had 2 solos.
Take last week’s IDP production from the Browns with this caveat: Cleveland’s D played 92 snaps. The average NFL team plays around 65 snaps. With Oliver Vernon (abdomen) out in Week Two and Adrian Clayborn hurt in the game, Porter Gustin (68% - 4 tackles) stepped in. Clayborn is Questionable and Vernon is Out for this week. Mack Wilson is practicing this week. If he steps in, he’s got a great matchup, as Washington gives up the 2nd-most fantasy production to LBs. B.J. Goodson should still see snaps even if Wilson returns this week. FS Andrew Sendejo had 4 tackles in Week One, then had 10 tackles (7 solo) in Week Two. 10 tackles likely won't happen often for him in this D, and this week is especially bad. With so much of WFT’s opposing IDP production falling to the LBs, there’s not much left for opposing secondaries. Washington gives up the 2nd-fewest FPG to DBs.

I preached patience with Bills second-year DT Ed Oliver last week and he delivered. Another second-year DT Jeffery Simmons (80%) had just 3 assists and a PD, but I think his big games are coming. This week, he has some big-play upside, as the Vikings have already surrendered 3 sacks to DLs. Now with a full game with both LBs on the field, we’re seeing a more even split of production between Jayon Brown and Rashaan Evans, who both posted 7 tackles. Evans’ role grew over last season. This is good for Evans’ fantasy value, but might be putting a ceiling on Brown’s. We need to see some more games, but it’s worth paying attention to. Kenny Vaccaro, had a monster game, racking up 11 tackles (10 solo), 1 sack, and 2 PD, but we can't expect this each week. Last week he had a more Vaccaro-like game: 4/2 and a PD. Minnesota is a decent matchup for DBs, ranking 12th in FPA to DBs through two games.
In his second game as a Viking, Yannick Ngakoue got up to 73% usage, posting 3 tackles (2 solo), 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. Fellow DE Ifeadi Odenigbo played 56%, recording a solid 5 tackles (2 solo). This Minnesota D-line is really missing Danielle Hunter. So are IDPers. MLB Eric Kendricks is off to a hot start: 11 and 12 tackles so far. With Anthony Barr done for the year, the team signed veteran Todd Davis. Will they use him this week? Or will Eric Wilson get to shoot his shot? Wilson was productive as a 3-down starter in the two games he operated in that role last season. He’s the 3rd LB in base. Safeties Harrison Smith (5 tackles) and Anthony Harris (6 tackles) continue to be productive DB2s, but this isn’t a great matchup on paper. Tennessee is 28th in FPA to DBs. Not having A.J. Brown is hurting their downfield attack, and Brown is Out this week as well.

The Raiders have a deep D-line and they are rotating heavily. As I always say: that’s good for real football but bad for fantasy. There seems to be no one main producer so far. Maxx Crosby should be that guy. He’s playing 75% but has just 2 tackles per game. This might not be his breakout game though, as the Patriots aren’t giving up much to opposing DLs. They have yet to give up a DL sack. It was Nicholas Morrow who took over for injured ILB Nick Kwiatkoski (pec), posting 7 solos, playing 100% of the snaps. Cory Littleton also played every snap but wow, Littleton has dropped off. He posted just 3 tackles and now has 9 on the year. This is not the LB1 he was with the Rams, and it’s the reason we kept pulling him down in our rankings as the season approached. This might be Alec Ogletree all over again. It was a slow game fantasy-wise for Johnathan Abram (just 4 solos), but he was everywhere. He should have a bounceback game. Rookie CB Damon Arnette was picked on when he was matched up with Tre'Quan Smith last week. We could see a similar situation this week with N’Keal Harry and Julian Edelman.
DL John Simon (89%) is off to a strong start. He had 8 tackles (5 solo) in Week Two and 4 tackles in Week One. He also has a good matchup, as the Raiders are a top-10 option for opposing DLs. Las Vegas is giving up 21 tackles per game to DLs. MLB Ja'Whaun Bentley (100%) just doesn't have a fantasy-friendly role in this defense. He had 5 tackles in Week One, and 4 tackles in Week Two. This is par for the course in this defense, so there’s nothing wrong with Bentley. The safety rotation in New England is getting predictably murky. Rookie Kyle Dugger (53%) is getting more usage. Had 6 tackles (4 solo). Adrian Phillips is playing a ton still, but not 100%. He was at 77% with 6 tackles (3 solo). Both of these players - along with veteran Devin McCourty - should be viable DB3s, but can Phillips keep this DB1 production up with Dugger more involved? This is what we were worried about heading into Week One. Dugger is listed as Questionable with an ankle injury.

With Nick Bosa done for the year, the team signed Ezekiel Ansah, but he likely won’t be on the correct side of this D-line rotation. Kerry Hyder stepped in for Bosa and did well: 8 tackles (2 solo) and 2 QB hits. With Bosa and Solomon Thomas both out, Arik Armstead should see more time. He had 3 tackles and a sack. Fred Warner (80%) had a massive game (12 tackles). We could see more of these with Bosa and Thomas out. If their D-line isn’t as penetrating as before, there will be more for Warner to clean up. This would also help Kwon Alexander. They both have the best matchup of the week. The Giants are the most fantasy-friendly team for LBs. Plus, they’re playing in front of the Giants’ generous stat crew. Hopefully, you weren't lured in by Emmanuel Moseley's 15-tackle Week One game. He came back down to Earth with just 2 tackles (1 solo). This is why most CBs can be frustrating for fantasy; most of them are bound by the other team’s gameplan.
We saw a lot of action at the NYG defensive line: Dexter Lawrence (5 solos), Dalvin Tomlinson (4/1), and B.J. Hill (3/1/1) all had strong games. This is how the Giants would love to see this D-line play all year. The Giants are copying the Packers D, with Blake Martinez being the only ILB out there and operating in a similar role as he played in Green Bay. Fellow ILB Devante Downs played just 16%. Martinez has a good matchup, as the 49ers are a top-5 option for opposing LB fantasy production. Logan Ryan (84%) is getting more involved as he gets comfortable in this defense. He had 7 tackles (6 solo) and a forced fumble. Ryan was essentially a 50/50 SCB and box safety. He’s climbing up the fantasy relevance charts. Let’s see if this production was a one-week thing, but I think it’s sustainable. Jabrill Peppers was most likely a victim of most of the production being soaked up by his D-line.

Last week’s TNF game was a disaster for this Bengals D. Some of what we saw might not be reliable if you assume that sometimes teams are flat, or unprepared, etc. and this can certainly be magnified on a short week. That said, grab a snorkel and let’s dive in.
Sam Hubbard (74%) played a ton, which is a good sign, but he's off to a slow start. This might be a “get well” game for him, as the Eagles have been abused by opposing DLs, making them a top-10 option. DT D.J. Reader was about the only bright spot for Cincy. He had 6 tackles (3 solo) and a TFL. Josh Bynes (86%) out-snapped Germaine Pratt (74%). He also outscored him in the tackles department: 8 to 2. So far, Akeem Davis-Gaither (32%) and Logan Wilson (24%) aren't a factor. Vonn Bell had a robust 8 tackles, but only 1 was credited as a solo. Keep rolling with Bell. This is a good matchup for him, as the Eagles are the #3 team for opposing DB fantasy production (60 tackles and 4 INTs). Jessie Bates III had 10 tackles as the free safety, but it's because the other 11 Bengals defenders forgot how to tackle last Thursday. Shawn Williams will make his 2020 debut as the team’s 3rd safety.
Veteran DE Brandon Graham (63%) had a sack last week and is still playing 50-60%. This is a great matchup for this whole D-line, as the Bengals are giving up the most FPG to opposing DLs, including 5 sacks. Nathan Gerry had a solid game for an LB2/LB3. He’s their every-down LB, and his 7-tackle Week Two tally should be around his average. I mentioned last week that the team is using more traditional 2-safety sets, and that continues to be the case. Jalen Mills (5/1) and Rodney McLeod (4/1) are splitting roles and production.

J.J. Watt is playing a solid snap share and looking like the J.J. Watt we all draft and love: 2 solos, 2 sacks, 1 PD, and 3 QB hits. Rookie Ross Blacklock was ejected early, so he only played 17 snaps. Zach Cunningham is making me look like a genius with his 15 tackle (10 solo), 1 sack game. And while I love Cunningham, Bernardrick McKinney is not dead. He posted 10 tackles (albeit just 3 solo) in Week Two and posted a 7-tackle effort in Week One. After playing deep for much of 2019, Justin Reid is finally being used near the action more. He had 5 solos in Week One and 10 tackles (8 solo) in Week Two. Pittsburgh is currently giving up most of their tackle production to DBs, with 54 tackles in two weeks.
EDGEs T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree continue to terrorize opponents. They had 3.5 sacks between them in Week Two. This could be a big game for Cameron Heyward. The Texans have given up 4 sacks to DLs so far. Devin Bush is settling in as an upside LB2. He posted 7 tackles (6 solo) and a PD. I’m still holding out hope that he’ll take that Devin White leap soon and be a reliable LB1. Fellow ILB Vince Williams is staying on the field around 60-80% and has been mildly productive so far: 5 and 6 tackles in two weeks. Mike Hilton is having a great season so far. He had 8 solos, 1 sack, 2 TFL, 1 PD, and a fumble recovery, after a 5-tackle, 1 sack, 2 PD Week One. Terrell Edmunds (92%) had 4 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 PD. Those tackle numbers should pick back up a bit. Minkah Fitzpatrick had a nice game, with 6 tackles (4 solo).
NYJ @ Ind
I love that DeForest Buckner is getting such heavy usage. Buckner played 81%, posting 3 tackles and 1.5 sacks. This Jets O-line is the 6th best matchup for DLs, giving up 3 sacks in 2 games. Stud LB Darius Leonard is under-producing, not under-performing. He's played every snap, but the Colts D has played two low-snap games. Leonard is 54th in snaps per game, which is around guys like Duke Riley and Alex Anzalone. His 15% tackle rate is still elite, so a correction is coming. He doesn't have a great matchup this week, but it’s not awful. The Jets are giving up 18.5 tackles per game to LBs. If Leonard comes away with about 8-10 tackles, I’ll be happy. It was a week late, but the rotation next to Leonard is already getting ugly for fantasy. Anthony Walker (30 snaps) was replaced by Bobby Okereke (46 snaps) on passing downs. Neither is going to be worth much for fantasy if they keep this up. After Malik Hooker left the game with an Achilles injury, Julian Blackmon stepped in and played well. He had 2 solos and 2 PD, one of which was tipped to fellow safety Khari Willis for an INT. Kenny Moore II had a strong game in Week Two (6 tackles, 1 INT, and 2 PD), but his matchup is bleh this week. The Jets give up a league-worst 14 tackles per game to the secondary. That’s going to be about 2-4 for Moore unless something drastically changes in the Jets’ gameplan.
Quinnen Williams (65%) exploded in Week Two: 7 tackles (4 solo) and 2 sacks. This is what the Jets were hoping to get from Williams. Does he have enough of these games in him to become a fantasy starter? Neville Hewitt (95%) led the LB corps with 6 solos. Alec Ogletree (55% - 2 solos) and Avery Williamson (27% - 3 tackles) split time next to Hewitt. I’m still holding out hope that Williamson will get back up to speed and be a fantasy factor. CB Brian Poole had another 6 solos, after posting 9 tackles in Week One. He also has a PD and TFL in each game. At this point, you’re starting Marcus Maye without prejudice, but in case you were debating another option, Maye has a great matchup this week. The Colts are a top-5 option for DB production, giving up 33.5 tackles per game. And ol’ Phillip Rivers has been prone to throwing the ball to the other team lately.

Rookie DT Derrick Brown played 72% but managed just 1 solo. He played 68% in Week One and had a productive game, so his star is on the rise. Just expect lots of inconsistency as he adjusts to the NFL, but dynasty-wise, Brown is off to a good start. Brian Burns is off to a fast start: 8 tackles (6 solo) and 2 TFL in two games. The big plays aren’t far behind. He’s also got one of the best matchups of the week. The Chargers are giving up the second-most FPG to DLs: 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks per game. I’m all in on Jeremy Chinn. He’s gonna be a stud. Tom Brady targeted him 7 times, only gave up 3/21. He’s had 8 and 7 tackles in his first two games, playing a nice mix of OLB/SS/SCB, playing virtually every snap. Conversely, safety Juston Burris also played every snap and has 3 tackles in 2 games to show for it. He's not playing well so far, including some bad missed tackles.
Patrick Mahomes is nearly impossible to sack. Unless you're Joey Bosa. Bosa also added 4 tackles to his sack. Linval Joseph has had back-to-back 4-tackle games. He’s clearly enjoying sunny California. I love seeing him be productive again after his injury-riddled last few seasons in Minnesota. Melvin Ingram III is dealing with a knee injury and is Doubtful. If he can’t go, Uchenna Nwosu should see more time off the edge. Kenneth Murray, Jr. did some damage in his new role. He played 83% and had 10 tackles (6 solo). It's Murray and Kyzir White (100% - 9 tackles) that are the new Chargers LB tandem for the time being. Let’s see if White can hang onto the starting job over and Nick Vigil. If I were a betting man (oh wait, I am) I’d say yes. The Panthers are a top-5 team for opposing LB production so far, so we could see both of these LBs push for double-digit tackles. When starting safety Rayshawn Jenkins went down with a groin injury (no one goes up from a groin injury), they used a few players to piece together the end of the game, but I think Desmond King II is the man for the job if Jenkins misses time. The team signed Jahleel Addae to the practice squad, so that’s an indication that Jenkins will miss time. Jenkins is listed as Questionable.

After a strong opener, Trey Flowers put up a doughnut on 58% in Week Two. This happens to DLs sometimes, but the Lions are moving him around a ton, and that will create inconsistency. Jamie Collins, Sr. played 76% and posted 4/1/1. That’s a great line if he were DL or EDGE eligible, but he’s not in most leagues. Jahlani Tavai's snaps were up - 81% - and he posted 6 tackles (3 solo). Will that continue and we’ll have a viable LB for fantasy? The answer is, of course not. Tracy Walker played only 53% and had 3/1 with a PD. After Aaron Jones blew past the two starting safeties, maybe that will change. With Desmond Trufant out (hammy), Jeff Okudah was TORCHED: 10 tgts - 7/121. Aaron Rodgers makes a living doing that to CBs of course, but Kyler Murray will take his shots this week. Trufant is listed as Doubtful for Week Three.
Chandler Jones has 6 QB Hits so far. That means his sacks are coming. Dude is playing 90%. His linemate Jordan Phillips has had a good start to his Cardinals career. However, Detroit hasn't produced much in terms of tackles for DLs. The Lions have produced a league-low 8 tackles per game so far. Jordan Hicks and De’Vondre Campbell are both productive for fantasy so far. They both have a good matchup this week, as Detroit is 6th in LB FPG (26 tackles per game.) Rookie Isaiah Simmons is still barely playing. I still love him as a dynasty stash. He’s the future here. Chris Banjo has 6 and 9 tackles through two games. He's starting for Jalen Thompson, who is still not healthy enough to return to action.
TB @ Den
Ndamukong Suh, usually the one to hold up O-lines so his teammates can make plays, finally got back into the sack game, with 2 (he also had 5 tackles). Devin White is starting to blossom. He and Lavonte David could be double-digit guys going forward as one of the best - if not the best - LB duos in the game. Both make tackles but also produce big plays. They have a great matchup, as Denver is giving up the 3rd-most FPG to LBs. Speaking of great duos, Jason Pierre-Paul (89% - 3/1/1 and a fumble recovery) and Shaq Barrett (94% - 3/2) are playing great. They switched sides and prefer being where they are now. JPP is nursing an injury, so hopefully he’ll be OK for this good matchup. We love Antoine Winfield, Jr. (98% - 8/3/1 and 1 FF). He’s been a game-changer for a defense that was already very close to being elite.
Jurrell Casey had another strong game: 4 tackles (3 solo) and a PD. That's 3 PD through two weeks. Bradley Chubb had 3 solos and a TFL, playing 86%. His game is starting to pick up. Alexander Johnson's 6/2 is going to be one of his lower outputs of the season, but he might have a repeat this week. Tampa Bay is dead last for opposing LB production. Hang in there with AJ if he puts up another 6/2-ish line. Josey Jewell continued to play a large snap share (96%) because Mark Barron is still out. He had 4 tackles (3 solo). Justin Simmons posted 8 tackles (7 solo) after 6 in Week One. He also added 2 PD. I love him as a DB2, but he could be a DB1 this week. The Bucs are a top-5 matchup for DBs, giving up 30 tackles and 1.5 tackles per game.

DeMarcus Lawrence got banged up (knee), so he saw just 28 snaps, but he had 5 tackles (2 solo). Everson Griffen saw more usage after that. Another strong game from Aldon Smith: 5 tackles (2 solo) on 81% usage. There’s going to be a lot of production on this line. Joe Thomas stepped right in for Leighton Vander Esch, posting 12 tackles and a TFL. So far, Seattle has been a bad matchup for LBs, giving up just 15 tackles a game. Darian Thompson is now part of a 3-man rotation at strong safety. Yuck. He's droppable, or at the very least benchable.
Bobby Wagner had a solid bounceback game - 8 tackles (5 solo) - but we're hoping he moves back near double digits soon. Chasing Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott could do the trick. As I mentioned before, Jamal Adams is their primary pass rusher. He posted a healthy 6/4/1 last week, and Dallas has been giving it up to DLs. Adams isn’t technically a DL but does most of his damage functioning as a DL. Ugo Amadi had 8 solos filling in at SCB for Marquise Blair. Dallas is likely to target Amadi early and often.
GB @ NO
Kenny Clark is practicing but I’m not sure if he’ll be ready to play yet. He’s listed as Questionable (groin) and would be a big boost to their D-line. Rashan Gary’s snap count is on the rise. He posted 2/2/1.5 on 33 snaps (55%). Gary and the Smith boys had 3 sacks. Christian Kirksey continues to eat as the only ILB. He posted a 12-tackle (10 solo) day with Clark out. He’s a good bet for another double-digit day, as the Saints give up 20 tackles to LBs per game, and are 8th-best for LBs. SCB Chandon Sullivan had a strong game in the slot. He only had 1 solo, but he had a pick-six. He’s not usable for fantasy yet, but teams might start looking his way more to avoid the Packers’ top two corners.
Cameron Jordan (90%) is still playing hefty snaps. Las Vegas has a great O-line, so we'll take the 5 tackles (2 solo). The bad news is, the GB O-line is also stingy. Alex Anzalone (71%) has been playing a little over two-thirds of the defensive snaps so far. He’s recorded 4 and 5 tackles in his two games. C.J. Gardner-Johnson (68% - 1 assist) was disappointing for fantasy. This is what we were worried about with the return of fellow DB P.J. Williams. The Saints are likely to use Johnson and Williams in a frustrating rotation. It was P.J. Williams and Marcus Williams bore the brunt of the Darren Waller attack.

My sleeper DL Tanoh Kpsassangon had 4 tackles and a PD on 93% usage. Taco Charlton is continuing his climb into football and fantasy relevance, with a sack in his first game after surprisingly making the final 53. That was partly due to Frank Clark's early exit with an illness. Clark is expected to be back this week. With Clark coming back, Charlton will likely recede to a smaller snap count. This KC D-line will be facing the 4th-best option for fantasy production. Lamar Jackson has been sacked 4 times by DLs already this season. Damien Wilson (67% - 12 tackles) and Anthony Hitchens (78%) - 9 tackles) are settling in as the low-ceiling LBs to own here, with Ben Neimann (55% - 9 tackles) also holding his own. All three of these LBs could be LB3s for much of the season, but we're hoping this rotation will work its way into a 2-man team at some point. All three are getting exploited pretty heavily. Also, don't be fooled by all that double-digit or near-double-digit production. The Chiefs played a whopping 83 snaps in an overtime game. For those of us hoping rookie Willie Gay, Jr. (6 snaps) would step in at LB, it's not happening yet. Teams keep going after rookie L'Jarius Sneed, and he keeps making them pay. He’s had back-to-back games with an INT, which accessorizes nicely with 9 tackles and 3 PD.
Calais Campbell is still killing it out there: 5 tackles and a sack. He and Derek Wolfe are making an already-dangerous defense damned-near unstoppable. Patrick Queen is still hovering around 70%. That usage will cap his ceiling. He posted 9 tackles (7 solo), but it's gonna be hard to consistently climb into the double-digit tackle range if he doesn’t stay out there on every down.
